Presidential campaign: On The Farm

By Annie Shepherd for The Parisian Post.

Week ending 26 February 2012. At the Agriculture Salon Sarkozy pledges support for farmers, sweeping up votes for his presidential campaign. The industrial sector in crisis, riots in La Reunion, Senegal’s elections, Somalia, Syria…

Pig happy, cock on the run
the cow jumped over the moon to learn
she’d never need to go out in the sun –
she can join a Club Med of one million cuds
tethered in a milking usine
gathered together like their German cousins.
A crow among the pigeons –
Sarko promising industrial sheds
jobs for the farmers pushing the buttons
one for Daisy, one for Pâquerette,
an udder here and another there
and milk in gallons in just one second.
Industry, industry must not die
keep the cock crowing, the pig in the sty
the wolf from the sheep – and the votes in hand
at the farmers stand; praise the pâté and pie.
While in Sudan it rains bombs on the farms
a government eating all its own people
and Wade-à-vie Senegal on the edge
wading through non constitutional mud
and Fukushima’s birthday looming
Reunion rioting, still smoke in the air
no jobs here and no jobs there
and London calls a Somalia Summit
but even a lifeboat can sink in despair.
And still Syria simmering.
